People ask us why we raise alpacas. What do we do with them? What is our end product? Can we make a living with them? And, the list goes on! The answer is, it is all about the soft, luxurious, beautiful, non-itchy fiber they produce that keeps them warm, and then keeps us warm! Once a year, our alpacas receive a visit from our professional shearer, who gives everyone their yearly haircut. By the time a year’s growth is shorn, we harvest several pounds of this wonderful fluff from each animal, and two objectives are met: First, our alpacas are now comfy and cool for the hot, summer months. Second, our end product is now available to be sold raw or processed into a wide variety of products for either sale or our own use. It’s a win-win! There are many hand spinners in the world, and they love the raw fleeces, untouched and the way they came off the animal. Since alpacas produce over 22 natural colors, there is a wide variety from which to choose. There are also different categories of fiber, depending upon micron count, for as many varieties of uses. From the ultra soft “baby alpaca” to coarser fiber used for rug yarn, there is something for everyone. Fiber artists abound, around the world. People create their own yarn, felt clothing, slippers, hats, toys, blankets, rugs, and the most amazing art! Since alpaca takes dyes very well, the color spectrum is unlimited. There is no end to the beauty and utility of alpaca fiber.
